Lands

The Wet’suwet’en (People of the Wedzin Kwah, Bulkley River) have maintained a deep connection to their Yintah (Territory) for thousands of years. Spanning 22,000 km², the Yintah includes Witset—the largest Wet’suwet’en Reserve—located at Kyah Wiget (Old Village), a key gathering place for all five clans. Witset First Nation (WFN) governs seven Indian Reserves: Babine 17, Babine 18, Bulkley River 19, Coryatsaqua (Moricetown) 2, Jean Baptiste 28, Moricetown 1, and Oschawwinna 3, covering 14.084 km².

WFN holds the inherent right to govern its Lands and Resources. The Lands Department is responsible for land use planning, zoning, and economic development. It oversees environmental protection, archaeological assessments, and cultural resource management. The department also supports community land designation for housing and infrastructure, as well as wildlife and fisheries management.

Additionally, it collaborates with proponents on major projects and assists members with residential and rural lot development. With a focus on responsible land management and sustainable development, the department is committed to updating member land status, identifying new subdivision opportunities, and implementing the Street Sign Project. Expanding the Lands Department website and researching Land Code options are also key priorities. Community engagement remains essential, ensuring that land use planning aligns with Wet’suwet’en values and priorities.

The Lands Department actively involves members in planning processes and discussions with Chief & Council. Ongoing engagement sessions provide opportunities for members to learn about land management, share concerns, and help shape the future of WFN lands. For more information or assistance, please contact the Lands Department.
